The OTHER “Niggerhead Rock:” Named by Democrats, Erased by Republicans

By David Stein

It’s a story that pushes the limits of unmitigated stupidity. The “mainstream” media, the political left, and even one or two folks in the GOP are up in arms over a rock. Yes, in a time of unprecedented economic strife, joblessness not seen since the Great Depression, and the global threat of Islamic terror, there are some who are seriously suggesting that we should focus our national outrage on a stone. And not just any stone – an “evil” stone…a racist stone!

The story goes like this: Decades ago, Rick Perry, not yet governor of Texas (not yet a Republican, either), and his father leased a large parcel of land to hunt on. And on that land, placed there long before the Perrys ever arrived, was a rock with the word “Niggerhead” on it. And Rick Perry had the ugly epithet painted over.

End of story.

Are you outraged? Well, you should be, according to the MSM. The Washington Post devoted 3,000 words to the story, claiming that Perry didn’t paint over the word fast enough. The New York Times went so far as to state that painting over the word was not good enough – the rock should have been destroyed, as if the slur had rendered it evil, and only reducing it to gravel would have freed the land of its malevolent influence (the fact that Perry was only leasing the property, and therefore not necessarily legally permitted to destroy parts of it, notwithstanding).

(As an aside, if a Christian conservative like Michele Bachmann had leased a plot of land on which there was a rock with a satanic pentagram carved into it, and if she had had the rock destroyed, the “rational secularists” of the left would have endlessly ridiculed her for her “ignorance” and “superstition” in believing that a mere word or symbol could render an inanimate object worthy of destruction)

The Rick Perry “racist rock” story is about as dumb as anything I’ve ever covered. But, having been raised on the uber-liberal Westside of L.A., I am well-versed in leftist clichés, and I think it’s appropriate to employ one right now: as idiotic as the outrage over the “racist rock” is, it’s also what liberals like to call a teachable moment.

The story of the race-hating rock has played into the MSM/liberal narrative that Republicans are racists. This meme is one of the most sacred to Democrats and their supporters, and, in order to keep it alive and in play, it’s necessary to excise from the historical record the Democratic Party’s vile, ugly history of segregation, Jim Crow, the Klan, and other evils that brought so much misery to black Americans in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Fortunately, many conservatives, of all colors, have been fighting back against this whitewashing of Democrat history, taking every opportunity to remind black voters that their “best friends” haven’t always been so friendly.

Which brings us to “Niggerhead Rock.” No, not the little stone on a parcel of private hunting land. This “Niggerhead Rock,” which is said to resemble a human face in profile, is an enormous natural formation and tourist destination (and popular hiking spot) in Lee County, Virginia (in the town of Pennington Gap).

One would think that with all the controversy over the little “Niggerhead Rock” that littered the land where Rick Perry hunted, the MSM would give a mention to the giant one which used to adorn souvenir items and hiking guides throughout Virginia. But even a follow-up WaPo article about other offensively-named U.S. locales failed to mention the Texas rock’s big brother in Virginia (even though two other Virginia sites are mentioned).

Perhaps that’s because the WaPo, and the rest of the MSM, are petrified of having to tell their readers that the big rock was given its offensive name by Democrats, and it took a Republican to remove the epithet.

Officials in Lee County are, understandably, not enthusiastic about discussing the history of what is now officially known as “Great Stone Face.” It took several phone calls to Lee County and Pennington Gap officials to get the details. According to what I was told, in the past, locals had always referred to the rock by the derogatory name. In the early 1900s, when Democrats ruled the state, the name became official, and was used as a marketing tool to attract tourists, picnickers, and hikers.

Efforts in the 1960s to rename the rock were swiftly rebuffed by the Democrats who still controlled the statehouse.

And then, in 1970, came the arrival of the first Republican governor in almost one-hundred years – A. Linwood Holton, who ran for office on a platform of desegregation and black voter empowerment (breaking with tradition, Holton even made it a point to send his children to an integrated public school, a downright revolutionary act for a Virginia governor at the time).

As part of Holton’s reforms, “Niggerhead Rock” finally lost its offensive name. The locals with whom I spoke wanted to make sure I mentioned that the people of Lee County were not resistant to the change; many of them welcomed it. And today, “Great Stone Face” is one of several humanoid rock formations in the U.S. that continue to attract sightseers and hikers each year, its ugly former name – the product of racist Democrats – relegated to memory.

All thanks to a Republican.

So let’s take the hysteria surrounding the Rick Perry “racist rock” and turn it into a “teachable moment” regarding the foul, racist history of the Democratic Party, and the false, historically-inaccurate “Republican-equals-racist” meme that the MSM takes every opportunity to peddle.

I’m afraid most conservative/republicans just don’t get it. I only recently received this epiphony a couple of weeks ago. You see, back in the late 1800’s, the republicans WERE the racists.

Track with me for a minute…

In their minds, the southern democrats took care of the minorities. They provided 3 square meals a day, a roof over their heads and gave them a steady job. It didn’t cost the minorities a penny. Many of them even got paid… modestly, to be sure, but when all your basic needs are met, how much money do you need?

Now, enter the ‘evil’ republicans. After a long, bloody war, the republicans ‘set the minorities free.’ Now, they had to fend for themselves. They had to buy their own food, find their own jobs, build or buy their own home. They had to care for themselves because the loving, caring democrats couldn’t care for them any more.

The democrats have been trying to get back to that culture, for our own sakes, ever since. So, you see… from their point of view, the democrats have ALWAYS been pro-minority. It’s a sickness, but it explains a lot.

Oh; I thought they were talking about Obama’s head. Darn.

Not really ‘relegated to memory’. More like ‘down the memory hole’ as in ERASED from memory by The Party.

  9. mason says:

i live in lee county where our beloved stone face is, nobody uses the term “nigger-head” to refer to it anymore. we usually call it stone face or the indian above.

Stumbled across this old story while doing some research about something, and can’t help but laugh…you see, the “democrats” of the early 1900s were those who are today the Republicans…What Repugs always seem to conveniently forget when they throw around phrases like “it was the Republicans who ended slavery” etc. is that the parties switched platforms around 1940s or so. So if the name became official in the 1900s, it was made so by the equivalent of today’s GOP. If a Republican happened to change the name in the 1960s, well, he probably didn’t get the memo that the parties had switched platforms and that he was actually a Democrat now. After all, things do move a lot slower down here in Lee County…

Maybe you should research deeper. You night find the name change didn’t quite go down the way it was described to you. You may or may not find references to threats of explosive devices being used to terminate it’s life by a group of African American empowerment very prevalent in the late 60’s early 70’s.
